Thinking about retirement?
STEP 1 - BE CONSCIOUS ABOUT THE TRANSITION
For most people, transitioning into retirement is a huge life change, which takes time to get used to. Career life is like travelling along a freeway at 110kmh. It makes sense to slow down to 70kmh on the exit ramp, before you fully exit the workforce. The old model of work full time for 40 years, then resign and enjoy a life of leisure is being replaced with new ideas about ways you can better manage this phase in your life. So taking your time to build your game plan and transition at your own pace is a wise move.

STEP 2 - UNDERSTAND YOUR WORK OPTIONS
It's important to understand all the available options which are available to you in your final years of work. You can discuss where you're at in a confidential conversation with someone you can trust to help you make the right choices for you. There are two ways you can do this: either the People and Culture team, or with our external Employer Assistance Program. And we recommend reading the leaflet below which explains more about this stage in your career.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
If you would prefer to talk to someone who does not work at your employer, we offer a safe confidential place where you can discuss ideas and explore your options.

Transition to Retirement options (at work)
This easy to understand leaflet explains all the available options you have to help make your transition a positive experience.

Talk with People & Culture
If you want to discuss flexible working conditions, changes to employment, development opportunities, superannuation or other concerns, click here to email Mary Smith for a confidential conversation.
STEP 3 - TALK TO YOUR MANAGER
After you have completed your "What's changing for me?" exercise (see step 1), we recommend the next conversation you have is with your manager. They will be interested to know your plans. Whilst this may be a conversation which is hard to have (as many people can feel nervous discussing life beyond work), there are a range of continuing employment options available to you. We all need to work together to have more conscious dialogues about this life transition and so we're seeking ways to make this easier for everyone.
STEP 4 - CONSIDER YOUR GAME PLAN
Winston Churchill once said 'He who fails to plan is planning to fail'. It is essential you enter this new phase of life with a holistic game plan. We offer a program that enables you to create yours. Watch this video and click the download button to find out more about this new five week program.
STEP 5 - TRY OUT THE PROGRAM
If you are thinking about taking my game plan, you can try out one of the lessons to get a feel for the program. It will give you an insight about what to expect. Download the lesson and watch the learning movie below.
STEP 6 - SIGN UP TO THE PROGRAM
STEP 7 - LEADERS, EMPOWER YOUR SUCCESSOR
If you work in a management or leadership role, we will work with you to help you find, engage and mentor your successor, before you retire. Watch this video to learn more about this new succession planning program we offer.
If you're considering retiring and know that your exit will leave a void of your skills, please give us a call in People and Culture, so we can collaborate together to find and develop your successor.
